Week 1 OTR Summer Power Rankings

Now that the state champions have been crowned & the spring/summer season upon us, it’s time to rank the top 10 17’s, & top 5 15’s & 16’s teams in the greater Houston area. This list will surely change week after week! Here’s the 1st installment.

1. Houston Hoops– Summer Creek guard Amaree Abram has raised his level of play, Derrian Ford, and Zuby Ejiofor have been an effective outside/inside combo, & 6’10 ’23 Tyler Smith has shown why he’s a national top 20 player in America. Tim Schumacher has plenty of talent on hand as guards Jordan Williams & BB Knight’s play has warranted both players’ recruitment to sky rocket. With a staff, that includes Marland Lowe, NBA vets Maurice Taylor & Ricky Davis, & a healthy Jacolb Cole, look for this group to make big noise this summer.

2. JL3 – With one of the hottest names in the country in 5A state MVP Terrance Arceneaux, they could have easily been in the top spot. Add in the fact that 6’11 top 25 big Vincent Ichukwu, & top 75 combo Austin Nunez are also in tow and the 1st year EYBL program looks mighty formidable. Shawn Jones & Isaiah Barganier bring athleticism and depth to the front court. The addition of ’23 Chris Johnson, who played well this past weekend in San Antonio, is a big time pick up. Excited about seeing these kids perform on the EYBL.

3. Houston Defenders– 6’5 ’22 Xavier Owens has been playing well, picking up a couple of new collegiate offers. East Carolina commit Chancellor White, & Cam Crockett are long wing prospects who compliment each other. PG Kemo Millender bring toughness, and open play making ability to this group. ’22 CG Jaleen Goodman has joined this group and will push the pace with Millender to make for an exciting back court.

4. FAM Elite- Coach Sei Paye is one of the best young basketball minds in the game. He has arguably two of the best shooters in the class in Aj Aungst & Brody Robinson. A steady pg in Devion Randle, & two inside/outside forwards 6’7 Aaron Rucker, 6’7 Omar Elchazli. 6’8 ’23 Keanu Dawes will be on of the most recruited players in his class. This team is scary good and will be a tough out for anyone.

5. Houston Superstars – The mouth of the south, John Eurey, has said that he has the best backcourt in the country. Pj Haggerty & Mason Docks are pretty good, and they will get their chance to show if the can live up to the lofty expectations. Haggerty is one of the hottest guards in the country coming off of a big time junior season. He will be asked to carry this squad. Docks has shown his playmaking ability & so far this spring, has looked the part.

6. Drive Nation Black– The quartet of Trevor Frank, Jaylon Johnson, Colby Rasberry, & Trey Miller are experienced & ready to take on all comers. They payed really well this past weekend at #GRGL2021, all of these pieces fit and they seem to enjoy playing with each other. Unsigned Reyce Allen gives them an interior presence and is a monster on the glass.

7. Texas Takeover Pete- ’22 Jailian Ardoin has been a pleasant surprise for TTO, he had a big weekend last weekend, scoring 20+ plus and grabbing 7+ rebounds each game. 6’7 Jarret Valenica is a rim protector, who is a Swiss army knife, he does a little bit of everything. Clear Lake sharp shooter Von Wells spreads the floor, Paul Oyewale and Elijah Hill got the dirty work done inside.

8. Scholar Athletes- Guard Angel Johnson had a really good junior season, & he has picked up right where he left off. Spring PG Leslie Newsome has been a great pick up for them, his decision making and shooting have been key. Underrated Kingwood HS big Demi Areola has been versatile and commands a double team down low. This is a team that can’t be slept on or take lightly.

9. TTG- Excited about coach Chung’s team. A healthy Ameer Oakley is a beautiful thing. 6’7 Sean Elkinton is a match up nightmare, a double double machine. Love the way he attacks the glass, great motor. Guard Matthew Lewis was a key figure in the Ridge Point’s playoff run, and his shot making ability always makes him a threat. Inside De’Rail Wilson, and Conlie Christmas are great pieces to add with Elkinton.

10. TJ Ford Basketball- They are young, talented & you know they will be developed. Tim & Tj Ford have only 2 juniors on the roster, but the two they have are talented kids. 6’6 Darriyus Woodson & 6’7 Bryan Etumnu will be hot names to know this summer. The sophomore back court of Bryce Smith and TJ Ford Jr are quick and will spread you out, and 6’8 freshman Robert Miller will clean up everything inside. Once they get everyone healthy.. it’s going to be a long summer for opponents.
