SPC South Championship Game Preview (Epsicopal vs Houston Christian)

When I think rivalries I think about the Hatfield/McCoys, Duke/Carolina, Yankees/RedSox, Chick Fil A/My Diet, & in the SPC it’s Episcopal vs Houston Christian. Last year Episcopal beat Houston Christian in the regular season finale thriller 75-72, then 8 days later HC got their revenge, beating Episcopal 67-53 in the SPC championship game. This game tonight will be another barn burner as once again the #1 seed in the SPC South is up for grabs. Here’s a breakdown of what each team needs to do to win, and what key players need to step up.

Houston Christian Keys to the Game

Getting out in transition, Sahvir Wheeler and Noah Kon need to push the pace and find Kobe Haynes and Ty Archibald for wide open 3’s and easy layups.

These 4 guards will also need to defend and pick up full court, and force turnovers for HC to have a chance.

The most important thing HC needs to do is remain focused on the task at hand. The crowd will be crazy, tempers will flare and there will be a lot of chatter on the court, but if they stay locked in they will have a chance to win.

X FactorWill Vail.. I know, I know.. not what you expected right! But he will definitely play a huge role with his toughness, rebounding and the ability to play a lot bigger than his 6’1 frame. He will have the task of defending the bigger interior players of Episcopal, and if he can rebound, and defend at a high level, it will give his team a better chance to escape with a W!

Houston Christian Keys to the Game

Getting the ball inside and getting paint touches. Jahari Long & DA Houston have to attack the rim, and get the ball inside to DJ Nussbaum and Adam Kanafani. They have the size advantage over HC and need to use it get over the hump tonight.

Controlling the tempo, it’s very important that they run their sets, and get quality shots offensively. They can not get in a track meet with HC. Long needs to be the “wrangler” and make sure he controls the reins of this game.

Getting back on defense after a made or missed shot will be key. HC loves to run, and get more possessions than their opponent so EHS will have to make sure that all 5 guys are sprinting back and talking on defense.

X FactorDJ Nussbaum. The 6’8 forward will need to make his presence felt early and often. His ability to finish around the rim, and rebound the ball will the difference for his team tonight.

There will be a lot of questions answered tonight… Will the 2020 Episcopal crew get a statement win and the #1 seed? Will the undersized Houston Christian get the biggest win of their season and steal one on the road? Can the winner of this game carry momentum into next weekend’s SPC tournament? Episcopal was my preseason pick as the SPC champs, Wayne Jones and crew are loaded and primed for a title run. I have to tip my hat to Ron Crandall, Noah Kon, & company for not only keeping the ship afloat without Wheeler, but sailing the seas with ease. This will be the last high school game that Sahvir Wheeler will play in Houston in his great career, and I can’t see him losing…

My prediction: Houston Christian 74- Episcopal 70
