OTR Exposure Unsigned Series- Gerry Ray Jr

Because of the continued growth of the city of Houston, the talent pool is so spread out that it’s getting more and more difficult to evaluate and cover some of the top players. Because of this sometimes guys tend to fall through the cracks, Gerry Ray Jr is one of those kids. He’s been a PLAYER since he was a youngster and now I’m going to make sure people start to pay attention to his big game.

5’11 G Gerry Ray Jr (Terry HS)

I’ve been watching this kid play since he was in the 5th grade, and the one thing that has stood out about him is his love for the game. Gerry is one of the most underrated PG’s in the city of Houston and has shown the ability to put up huge numbers throughout his HS career. He has a college ready body and understands how to use it to finish through contact. Another one of his strengths is ability to use the pick and roll. His understanding of what reads to make, despite the fact that he hasn’t always had an abundance of talent around him at Terry the last couple of years so he’s had to score and score often but still tries to make the right basketball play.  Defensively is where I think he can have the biggest impact on the next level because of his quick hands along with his ability to sit down and guard. He’s having one of the better senior campaigns, averaging 24.5 PPG, 5.6 APG, 6.1 RPG, 3.1 Steals while shooting 35% from 3. When you watch him play you can tell that he’s playing with a chip on his shoulder, and that feeling of being undervalued has really shown in his game this season. He already has offers from a few schools including Division III powerhouse, University of St. Thomas, and his recruitment will increase this spring, especially if he has nights like his 43 point explosion in a game against Crosby earlier in the year.
