2019 RCS Sports Season Opener Preview

The 2019 RCS Season Opener is right around the corner here are the predictions and previews of each game. The rankings are according to our Greater Houston Area team power rankings.

9:30 am Aldine Nimitz vs #18 Houston Christian

Coach Toon & Nimitz boasts one of the best front courts in the city with 6’8 Jr Ashton Smith & 6’5 Sr Reggie Comeaux. They will have a major advantage inside against the smaller Houston Christian team. HC coming off of a surprising 68-61 loss at home to Westbury Christian on Tuesday will look to bounce back and get in the win column. The 2021 guard trio of Noah Kon, Elijah Bernstein, & Kobe Haynes will need to have better performances vs the Cougars if they want to have a chance at this game.

OTR Prediction: Nimitz 65- #18 Houston Christian 59

11am Aldine Davis vs #17 Sam Houston

Aldine Davis has some talent and are looking to break out and get more respect. First year coach Chris Packer will depend on 6’8 Sr Jayshon Cannon & 6’4 Sr Ja’Quan Lewis to provide leadership and help carry this team. They are a high flying group who will look to challenge for the district 16 6A crown. I always look forward to watching Sam Houston play and seeing how much coach Ralph Barreras can get out of his guys. Their back court of Garrick and Jerrick Baines & sophomore Cam Amboree should have big games, as this will be an uptempo, high possession affair. The inside battle between 6’9 John Shanu vs Cannon will be solid.

OTR PREDICTION: Aldine Davis 75-  #17 Sam Houston 80

12:30pm Langham Creek vs #4 Summer Creek

This will be a tough game for LC, 6’3 Sr RJ Crawford will have to have a big game to keep his team close. The veteran hot shooting guard will lean on Jr Chris Wiseman to help score and rebound inside. The full court pressure of Summer Creek will be hotter than fish grease, & they are loaded with exceptional guards. Led by Jr JaVon Jackson, & Sr’s Dylan Miles, and Dylen Scales, this team is primed for a run at the regional title. Junior forward Reyce Allen might have his coming out party on Saturday!

OTR PREDICTION: Langham Creek 62- #4 Summer Creek 80

2pm Westbury Christian vs #7 PA Memorial

I underestimated WC in their last game vs Houston Christian, & Chris Felix & company proved me wrong. Sophomore Aaron Williams & Sr Kehlin Farooq have to continue to come up with timely shots if they want a chance in this game. The land of Trill Titans are looking to make a run to San Antonio and the inside tandem of 6’8 Nate Clover and 6’7 Kenneth Lofton Jr will be the anchor legs. The LA Tech and Oral Roberts signee’s along with sophomore PG Amaree Abram will look  to start their season off with a bang!

OTR PREDICTION: Westbury Christian 65- #7 PA Memorial 77

3:30pm #3 Dickinson vs #5 Beaumont United

This game will have more smoke than a Snoop concert, Wiz Khalifa concert & Astroworld fest COMBINED! The Gators are scarier than your card declining at Walmart with a basket full of groceries. Tramon Mark & Marcus Williams are DUDES, they’ve taken their games to another level. Senior Guard Xzavion Bordelon is a highlight reel waiting to happen! Jabari Miller is athletic and physical and will hold it down inside until sophomore 6’6 Donovan Green returns from the gridiron. Also I just got confirmation that senior guard Deuce Guidry is 100% healthy and will be starting Saturday!! Just added some extra bullets to Dickisnon’s weaponry! BU’s Kasen Harrison is a DUDE also, the Lamar University pledge will look to get his “Rodney Dangerfield” on in this game. BU is long, talented and tough. They arguably are as talented as any team in the area. Justin Pleasant & Jaylen Subject are the goons, and they want alllll the smoke. Sophomore Terrance Arceneuax and freshman Wesley Yates and their young legs and deep range add to the potency of this group. This should be a good game.

OTR PREDICTION: #3 Dickinson 90- #5 Beaumont United 87

5pm #2 Morton Ranch vs #1 Yates

If you were looking to see one of the most exciting and talented public schools in the country, you’ll have to wait a little bit. This game would be the headliner if Yates was 100% healthy. Junior Gerald Doakes Chuks Isitua and Allen Udemadu will all be out. But don’t worry, seniors Rubin Jones & Antwon Norman will be in the building & primed for this stage! Also newcomer Elijah Elliott will also be suited up and ready to go! 6’8 Sr Marc Batts will have to step up and play well inside against the big fella from Morton Ranch. Speaking of Eddie Lampkin, the future TCU Horned Frog will be still getting his legs back after a slight knee injury. Super scorer LJ Cryer looked like a “2K created player” this fall! He’s on another level and the battle between he & Yates’ North Texas signee, Jones, will be a thing of beauty. Westley Sellers and Adrian Caldwell will be the X factors for Morton Ranch, if they win their match ups, Morton will win this game.

OTR PREDICTION: #2 Morton Ranch 96- #1 Yates 90

6:30pm #14 Hightower vs #16 Cy Creek

On Hurricane lane it is not just the Bryce Griggs show… The super soph has a really good supporting cast this year. Imports like 6’8 Sr Ja Robertson, 6’5 Nick Hale along with vets Kris O’neal II, Chris Harris, and Cam Collins will make them more formidable than last year. Sophomore JaCory Chatman is talented, keep an eye on him. Cy Creek is looking to ascend to to the top of the rankings and make a run at the regional title. Texas State signee 6’8 Nate Martin is healthy and his team will only go as far as he carries them. Juniors Chas Kelley, Braylon Haynes, and DJ Richards are valuable pieces and they will have to defend and be able to match the toughness of the Canes.

OTR PREDICTION: #14 Hightower 80- #16 Cy Creek 70

8pm #8 Shadow Creek vs #6 Episcopal

The finale of the evening will be a heavyweight tilt between two teams who have state championship aspirations. The veteran SPC runner up featuring their “Big 3”, Jahari Long (Seton Hall), D’Avian Houston (College of Charleston), & DJ Nussbaum (VMI). These three D1 pledges will be a load for a young Shadow Creek team. Their toughness and experience may be the difference in this game. Sophomore Brendan Mwamba will help these 3 when it comes to scoring and play making. The Sharks are young and talented, soph Shawn Jones Jr,  juniors Ramon Walker, Will YoungZy’Tarious Mortle will be a tall task for the Knights to defend. Senior Trey Hartfield (TAMU Texarkana) needs to step up and be leader for SC to have a chance to win.

OTR PREDICTION: #8 Shadow Creek 70- #6 Episcopal 72
